Where We Are

Monte San Savino, an ancient medieval village nestled in the heart of Valdichiana, boasts a rich and fascinating history. Evolving from an Etruscan settlement to a significant Roman village, its narrative spans centuries of conflict between Guelphs and Ghibellines, involving prominent cities like Arezzo, Florence, Siena, and Perugia. In the 16th century, the Ciocchi di Monte family, along with Antonio Cardinale, secured Medici protection for Monte San Savino. This chapter reached its pinnacle in 1550 when Antonio’s nephew, Giovanni Maria di Monte, became Pope Julius III. This momentous event led Cosimo I dei Medici to grant Monte San Savino as a county to the Pope’s brother, Balduino di Monte. This historical episode comes to life every year through the historical re-enactment known as “The Night of Count Baldovino,” celebrated every second Sunday in June.
